Z&#8217;s Blog<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wdtprs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Paul-VI.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Years ago I told this Pentecost Monday tale and it has made the rounds. \u00c2\u00a0It has made the rounds everywhere, but I am the origin of the anecdote, which I published years ago in the pages of <em>The Wanderer<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and also on the now defunct Catholic Online Forum in its Compuserve days. \u00c2\u00a0(Remember Compuserve? I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been at this since 1992.) Lots of people have picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>It bears repetition.<\/p>\n<p>This stands as a lesson for what happens when we lose sight of <em>continuity<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Take this for what it may be worth.<\/p>\n<p>Some years ago \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 gosh, it was decades now\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 I was told this story by a retired Papal <em>Ceremoniere <\/em>(Master of Ceremonies) who, according to him, was present at the event about to be recounted.<\/p>\n<p>You probably know that in the traditional Roman liturgical calendar the mighty feast of Pentecost had its own Octave.\u00c2\u00a0 Pentecost was\/is a grand affair indeed, liturgically speaking. \u00c2\u00a0It has a proper <em>Communicantes<\/em> and <em>Hanc igitur<\/em>, an Octave, a Sequence, etc. In some places in the world such as Germany and Austria Pentecost Monday, Whit Monday as the English call it, was a reason to have a civil holiday, as well as a religious observance.<\/p>\n<p>The Novus Ordo went into force with Advent in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>The Monday after Pentecost in 1970, His Holiness Pope Paul VI went to the chapel for Holy Mass. Instead of the red vestments, for the Octave everyone knows follows Pentecost, there were laid out for him vestments of\u00c2\u00a0<em>green<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul queried the MC assigned for that day, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What on earth are these for?\u00c2\u00a0 This is the Octave of Pentecost!\u00c2\u00a0 Where are the red vestments?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>Santit\u00c3\u00a0<\/em>,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d quoth the MC, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153this is now <em>Tempus \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcper annum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 It is green, now. The Octave of Pentecost was abolished.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Green?
