Indulgences for the Poor Souls

Current regulations in force by Pope Benedict XVI
I On All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2) a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit any parish church or public oratory and there recite one Our Father and one Credo.

II On all the days from November 1 though November 8 inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray even if only mentally for the departed.

Conditions for both indulgences:

1. Only one plenary indulgence can be granted per day.

2. It is necessary to be in the state of grace, at least by completion of the work.

3. Freedom from attachment to sin, even venial sin, is necessary; otherwise the indulgence is only partial. (By this is meant attachment to a particular sin, not sin in general.)

4. Holy Communion must be received each time the indulgence is sought.

5. Prayers must he recited for the intentions of the Holy Father on each day the indulgence is sought. (No particular prayers are prescribed. One Our Father and one Hail Mary suffice, or other suitable prayers.

6. A sacramental confession must he made within a week or so of completion of the prescribed work. (One confession made during the week, made with the intention of gaining all the indulgences, suffices.)

Remembering our Beloved Dead

During the Month of the Holy Souls, we remember our deceased relatives and friends in both personal and public prayer. It is a good and salutary practice to have Masses offered for the happy repose of the souls of the deceased. In the past, families often had Masses offered on the Months mind (one month after the deceased died), and then annually on the anniversary of a person’s death, marking special anniversaries such 5th, 10th, 25th, etc. To have such Masses offered, please stop by the rectory.

A Catholic tradition for 1300 years, Gregorian Masses are a series of 30 Holy Masses offered on 30 consecutive days exclusively for the repose of the soul of a departed person. This pious practice comes to us from Pope St. Gregory the Great who was the first to popularize it. The Saint relates in his Dialogues how, when he had finished a series of thirty Masses for a departed monk, the monk miraculously appeared to him to tell him that he had gained entry into glory on the completion of the Masses. The Sacred Congregation for Indulgences has declared that the confidence of the faithful in the special efficacy of the Gregorian Masses is “pious and reasonable” (August 24, 1888). The special fruits of these Masses apply only to the deceased.

While we would be unable to offer a novena of Masses (nine consecutive Masses) or Gregorian (30 consecutive Masses) here, you can make arrangements (Tridentine Masses) with an individual priest or contact Clear Creek Monastery, 5804 West Monastery Road, Hulbert, OK 74441-5698. Gregorian Masses require a minimum stipend of $300 and a novena of Masses requires a minimum stipend of $90.

Another source for Gregorian Masses (Novus Ordo) is the Pauline Fathers. You may arrange to have Gregorian Masses offered for a loved one by writing to: Pauline Fathers, P.O. Box 2049, Doylestown, PA 18901. The stipend for these Masses is $450.00. Gregorian Mass requests are directed to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland.

Prayer for the Deceased

“O Lord God omnipotent, I beseech Thee by Thy Precious Blood, which Thy divine Son Jesus shed in the Garden, deliver the souls in Purgatory, and especially that one which is most forsaken of all, and bring it into Thy glory, where it may praise and bless Thee forever. Amen.”
Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be…
